Connecting The Dots

Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only person connecting the dots. At other times, I feel like I’m just being paranoid a conspiracy theorist for no good reason.

For instance, the latest thing to set off my paranoia, is the credit card hacking thing at Target. Now, it turns out that Neiman Marcus was also affected, so it makes me wonder, who handles their merchant accounts? Who is in charge of their customer data?

That lead me down the rabbit hole of merchant accounts, credit card processing, credit reporting and all of the information that these private entities have about you and me.

Do you realize, that through the use of credit and debit cards these people know everything about you? They know where you buy your food, what you buy at the gas station, what your medical conditions are, how much money you have in your bank account and Lord knows what else.

You know this right?

You know that these people are not entitled to your Social Security number, right?

You know that these people are not interested in your well being and that they do not have your best interests at heart, right?

Think about that the next time you go to swipe your credit card for a purchase in exchange for airlines miles on some airline that won’t exist by the time you have enough miles to go anywhere.

You are, willfully, giving these private entities, controlled by likely one or two very small groups of people at the most, all of your personal and private information.

Not just financial information, but your medical information, your family information, your most private personal things.

If you trust them to “safe guard” your information, you’re more delusional than I am.

Think I’m full of shit?

Automated behavioral targeting

Behavior targeting is changing the web

Look, I realize that we don’t have much of a choice. We are going to be tracked and targeted etc. no matter what we do. Even while we are just driving somewhere we can be targeted and tracked.

My big question, and my big point is this:

Who does all of this tracking benefit and what is the purpose of it?
