Since we want to do more video work over at Marketing Latinos, we bought a couple of cameras over the past weekend. One of the new cameras that we bought is a Kodak Zi8 video camera.
We picked the Zi8 over the more famous and popular Flip UltraHD Camcorder because the Zi8 allows for an external mic. That’s it.
I’ve seen a lot of videos filmed with the flip cam and the one thing that I hate the most about those videos is the tin like sound of the audio. This Zi8 has a built-in mic that provides the same sort of audio quality as the flip cam, but it allows me to connect my external mic to it.
There are a couple of things that I need to get used to though. I guess this is a good time to introduce you to the 10 “meh” system for rating products. The more “meh” the more the product sucks.
The biggest “meh” about the camera is that it has a “near/ far” button on the top. So you have to remember to flip it between near and far mode in order to get the best video. What this means, is that if you film something near you in far mode, the video is really grainy and blurry.
I don’t know if the flip cam has this same feature or not.
The other “meh” is that the USB plug is really short and just feels flimsy. I don’t know that this will be a problem in the future or not, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
The third “meh” comes in that importing the video to my Macs involves navigating through the folder structure on the camera to dig up the videos. I don’t know who’s ball in is in who’s court to fix this, but it seems like I should be able to plug the camera to the computer an iMovie or some other app should just import the video for me.
All in all, I’m happy with this camera, out of a possible 10 “meh” I rate this camera a solid 3 meh.
