Android’s global sales pass Apple’s

This is one of this “wooptie doo” type of things. There are more manufacturers selling Android devices, so it makes sense that the bigger number of manufacturers, the larger the diversity of devices, at different price points, ergo more sales.

Global sales of mobile phones reportedly rose nearly 14 percent in the second quarter versus last year, with devices that use Google Inc.‘s Android operating system passing Apple’s iPhone.

Market research firm Gartner also said Android devices passed Research in Motion Ltd.‘s (Nasdaq:RIMM) Blackberry as the No. 1 in sales in the United States in the quarter.

Gartner research vice president Carolina Milanesi credited the availability of Google’s (Nasdaq:GOOG) operating system on many devices at different price points as contributing to its explosive market share growth.

Android’s global market share went from 1.2 percent in the second quarter last year to 17.2 percent this year, Gartner said.
