The Pol Pot Effect

I’ve been thinking about this in reference to a lot of things. Comedian Eddie Izzard, during his stand up act, made a reference to this.

He said something along the lines that if someone kills 8 or 9 people, we can relate to that number. It’s a number that we can grasp and wrap our minds around.

However, when someone kills 2 million people, like Pol Pot did, we just don’t know how to react to that. We can’t imagine what 2 million people looks like, nor what it takes to kill that many people.

“Well done, you must get up very early in the morning.” Is what Eddie said would likely be the reaction. What else do you say, right?

Anyway, I was thinking about the Pol Pot effect as it relates to many other things.

Like Bernie Maddoff for instance. How does someone steal billions of dollars from people? That is the Pol Pot effect.

Anyway, just some random thoughts about random things.
