SAN MARCOS, TX – The Bears of San Marcos Academy will finish their season on Friday night on the road versus the number two seed in district the Panthers from Austin Hyde Park.

The Panthers enter the game on a 2-game winning streak after last week’s 48-14 blowout of Corpus Christi Pope John Paul II at home. They stand at 6-3 overall and have only dropped one game at home this year to San Antonio Christian by 17 points.

The Panthers players to watch: WR Matt Heytens (6-2, 200, 4.8), WR Hayden Courtney (5-9, 150, 4.5), QB Tom Rhea (6-0, 180, 4.9), TE Eddy Yousef (6-3, 220, 4.7), OL Ty Egbert (6-3, 230).

Top juniors: ATH David Dunkin (6-0, 170, 4.6), DE Davon Henry (6-3, 210, 4.6). Top sophomores: LB Andrew Kaluza (6-1, 180, 4.8). Other prospects: LB Michael Vasquez, DB Kramer Jones, OL Scott Shaver, DB Hollis Nix.

Rhea threw for 2,640 yards and 23 touchdowns in last season and has not let up this season. Heytens had 3 offensive touchdowns, 1 interception returned for a touchdown, 1 blocked punt and 2 sacks in last week’s win.

SMA Athletic Director/Assistant Coach Toby Wade said,

“I was really proud of the effort last week against San Antonio Christian, the score doesn’t even come close to indicating how hard the kids played.

Since we do not have a chance at making the playoffs even if we win, our guys are playing strictly for pride Friday night, but all the indications I have seen tell me that our guys will come to the field ready to give Hyde Park, which is a very good team, their best effort.”

The Bears will counter with Jonathan Powell rushing for 74.3 yards per game and passing for 69.2 yards per game. Powell passed for 134 yards last week for the Bears. Powell has passed for 623 yards with 7 interceptions through nine games.

Josh McIntyre leads receivers with 281 yards on 18 catches. The defense is led by Cameron Whitehead on tackles with 64 and Estevan Gutierrez with 5.5 on sacks this season. Diondrick McCoy has 2 interceptions also. Ty Merriweather is averaging 30.7 yards per kickoff return this season.

SMA Head Coach Les Davis said, “The rivalry between SMA and Hyde Park will always make this an interesting game. We need to send our seniors off on a positive note and set the tone for a great off-season.”

The Bears lose little and return most players for next season. The playoff team last season was heavy on seniors so this season was a rebuilding year for the Bears.

This will be a tough matchup for the Bears as they will be playing for pride as they were eliminated from the TAPPS playoffs last week after their loss to San Antonio Christian at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 from the Quarries at Hyde Park; the game can be watched at
